Communal clean-up exercises play a crucial role in preventing and controlling environmentally related
diseases such as typhoid, cholera, and malaria, which are prevalent in Ghana. As part of efforts to enhance
sanitation and promote environmental health, the Asikuma Odoben Brakwa District Assembly (AOBDA),
in collaboration with Breman Traditional Council as the major key stakeholder, organized the Eighth
National Sanitation Day Clean-Up Exercise on Friday and Saturday, 0ctober 31st and November 1,2025
respectively.
The initiative targeted the Asikuma Assembly premises and Breman Asikuma township, main station—
including the market center and lorry park with the aim of eliminating waste, promoting hygiene, and
encouraging active community involvement in maintaining a clean environment. Prior to the exercise, public announcements were made through HOPE FM by the Honorable DCE Madam Olivia Bentil and community information centers to educate residents about the upcoming clean-up.
During the exercise, all shops and stores were closed, and commercial vehicles were temporarily halted to
ensure full participation.
The District Chief Executive urged the public to refrain from indiscriminate dumping of waste, especially
into drains and gutters, to prevent flooding. She also directed Environmental Health Officers to conduct
regular inspections of the market and lorry park and to prosecute offenders who fail to comply with sanitation regulations.
The clean-up successfully removed a large volume of waste, improved drainage, and enhanced overall
hygiene. Recommendations were made to institutionalize regular clean-up activities and intensify public
awareness campaigns to maintain and build on the progress achieved
